While the state monopoly ruled over Greek Television, Harry Klynn, as many more artists who where disturbing, in a way, the political status quo, were naturally pushed aside. The Censorship bureau would banish them not only from appearing but even having their name mentioned on the air.
During that time, Harry Klynn managed to go on national television only once. It was in the Dionysis Savopoulos show entitled "HAIL TO GREEK SONGS", which no one dared to censor. Besides, Dionysis used to deliver the show one hour before air time. This first show on national television with Dionysis, was truly demolishing!!!!! So it was no surprise that it was the last one....
Being confronted by the constant rejection from national television, Harry Klynn resorted to an ingenious strategy. He truly invaded national television through advertising! The TV commercials in which he starred, thus forcing his way on the air (and most of which have been awarded in the Festival for Greek Advertising Creation organised by the Greek Advertising Companies Association), created a truly fantastic phenomenon. People stayed glued in front of their television sets, waiting anxiously for the off chance they might catch one of Harry Klynn's 25 second masterpieces. All of these commercials created a fuss, with their expressions and slogans staying at the tip of everyone’s tongue, especially among the masses and young people.
Upon creation of privately owned television, circa 1990, at last, the star of Harry Klynn began to shine. The Harry Klynn Special shows, which he presented on ANT1 TV for four consecutive years, were the most original thing Greek television had to offer. Each show of his became a big television event.
Then came "CITIZEN KLYNN", hosted on ANT1 again in1995, a co production between ASTRA THEAMA & AKROAMA and Nikos Vergetis. "CITIZEN KLYNN", a series of ten one hour episodes, was an extravagant one man show with Harry Klynn not leaving anything or anyone in peace; with his many disguises he stirred the stagnant water of Greek television and became the Greek response to the Italian type shows invading and overrunning the medium at the time. Its structure has been adopted by the most successful shows which are screened today, without ever attaining to reach its level of excellence. The numerous characters it created were never matched. And there are quite a few people who believe that "CITIZEN KLYNN" is the reason why many of today's shows and greek comic series go through crisis.
Harry Klynn ensured he would not be used up by television. What he was always interested in was the theatre and live shows. Occasionally though, he appears selectively, in different shows, all of which become an important event. He has offers every year from almost every big TV station in Greece, however his personal belief is that all things having completed their circle they should be replaced by new, more original attempts. That is what he is looking for and once he finds it, we will soon have the chance to see him on TV again.
